What really sold Parklane, for us, were two things. The first was an article on Parklane that popped up on Google by Asiaone, on the seedy massage parlours in the mall. It had the catchy title “Shopping and Sex at Parklane” (Nanayakara, 2009). We felt that it would be interesting to map out this aspect of a seemingly normal mall, and see if there lay a pattern within its chaos. Secondly, Parklane is seen as a much more rundown mall as compared to its well-maintained neighbours in the heart of town. We thought it would be interesting to speak to shopowners about its history and location, and how it has competed with other newer, shinier malls over the years.
Upon arriving at Parklane for our first recce trip, it became apparent that each shop exists in a tight little bubble. The shops were stuck in different time eras, and some shops had shady businesses whereas some ran more ordinary businesses. Furthermore, some shops had changed over the years while the others remained static. These contrasts has played out in the stories we have collected, which we will elaborate on later.
