b1

The B1 floor is populated by LAN gaming shops, Mcdonald’s, clubs, and a comic shop. These shops are frequented mainly by young people, especially the students from the nearby schools such as SOTA, Laselle, NAPFA and St. Margaret’s Girls School. However, at night, they seem to be populated mostly by adults who patronise the clubs. Interestingly, these clubs would publicly advertise their prostitution services with a signboard outside their shop.

Though Mr Chandra’s bookkeeping company closed down after 15 years of operation, that certainly did not stop him from visiting Parklane Shopping Mall. As one of the original tenants of the mall, 79 year-old Mr Chandra has many fond memories of Parklane and continues to visit the mall 3 to 4 times a week just for the food. In particular, the sweet-smiling man recommends the green bean soup at Isle Eating Cafe.

Being born during the World War II period and having seen how Singapore has transformed over the years, Mr Chandra highlights Parklane’s unchanging appearance and structure as part of its uniqueness. Despite the seemingly quiet and dull state of the mall, Mr Chandra describes the mall as “lively” and “an interesting place”. When asked about Parklane being “an interesting place”, Mr Chandra laughed and shared with us how he once witnessed a girl pulling a guy into the ladies’ toilet.

Parklane Shopping Mall may pale in comparison to the modern malls along Orchard Road. However, Mr Chandra believes that the mall will continue to survive despite what the naysayers have to say.

Wei Jun frequents the mall for the LAN shops on the first floor. He mentions that the LAN shops here are cheaper than those in other malls nearby such as Bugis+. He also noted that the LAN shops here are actually more well-equipped, with Razer gaming peripherals as well as the latest graphics cards which improve the gaming experience. Due to its location in the city, Parklane Shopping Mall also happened to be the midway point between him and his friends, making it a no-brainer when choosing the perfect location to game together.
